At age 13, Jode had just started high school, attending Woodford State School where his music teacher, Mr Thorpe took a great interest in Jode after he started playing David Bowie's Rebel Rebel on guitar in his first music lesson. After the passing of his Grandfather, Jodes mother decided to take him and younger sister Nara Katee Gannon to Woodford, Qld, a small rural town, an hours drive north west of Brisbane. Jode's guitar teachers would usually make fun of Jode and always underestimated his natural guitar talent with one teacher telling him that he would never make it as a musician. In primary school, Jode was quite a miss behaved student which lead him to never being picked for any of the advanced guitar classes.
